Norwegian Kjenge: Traditional Wooden Drinking Vessels
A kjenge is a wooden drinking vessel with two handles, often shaped into stylized animal heads. It is especially associated with Hordaland and Sogn in western Norway. The raised handles give it a memorable silhouette: even before you notice the decoration, the object seems to have a character of its own.
A vessel made to be held
The two handles belong to the object’s practical design. They provide places to grip the vessel, while their carved shapes turn those useful points into ornament. Some examples were hollowed from wood; other kjenger were constructed with staves. Painting and inscriptions could add another layer of decoration.
The form belongs to the wider history of Norwegian drinking vessels. It is worth distinguishing a two-handled kjenge from a bird-shaped dipper or other animal-shaped container, even when modern decorative designs bring their visual ideas together.
Horse heads and painted interiors
Reading Museum preserves a horse-headed ale bowl, probably Norwegian, with a simply painted exterior and scrolling foliage inside. Its interpretation places the development of painted horse-handled examples from the eighteenth century onward.
Inside and outside decoration can create two different experiences of the same vessel. From a distance, the heads and curved body define its outline. Up close, painted leaves and small carved details reward attention.
The kjenge as a modern motif
On a clock face, a kjenge becomes an image rather than a working drinking vessel. Paired heads can provide balance, while the bowl’s curved body creates space for color, flowers, or geometric ornament. Horse-headed and bird-headed interpretations offer different silhouettes.
The clocks below feature contemporary kjenge-themed designs. They celebrate the shape and decorative possibilities of the vessel; they are not antique objects or replicas intended for drinking.
