Sunburst Clocks and Midcentury Design

A sunburst design sends rays outward from a center. On a clock, that arrangement can make the timepiece read as both a useful dial and a decorative presence on the wall. Long and short rays create rhythm around the hands, giving a simple circle a sense of expansion.

Clocks in midcentury interiors

George Nelson’s clock collection is an important reference in the history of midcentury design. Commissioned in 1947, the project led to an initial collection of fourteen timepieces launched in 1949. Vitra dates the broader Wall Clocks collection to 1949–1960.

Nelson’s approach emphasized reading the relative positions of the hands rather than relying on numerals. He also considered the clock’s decorative role in an interior. The resulting designs explored varied shapes, colors, and materials, showing how an everyday object could become a strong visual feature.

What makes a sunburst recognizable?

The essential relationship is between the center and the surrounding rays. Closely spaced lines can create a dense halo, while a more open arrangement leaves the background visible between them. Alternating lengths add another rhythm.

The radiating motif is broader than any one designer’s work. A contemporary sunburst image should not automatically be described as a reproduction of a particular historical clock.

Our contemporary interpretations

The related clocks explore gold-toned sunburst imagery, including designs that combine the radiating form with Nordic gnome figures. Here the rays are part of the clock-face artwork rather than separate projecting spokes. Compare how the central subject changes the balance: an open center emphasizes the pattern, while a figure gives the composition a character and a story.
