Whales Along the Norwegian Coast

← Back to the dictionary

Norwegian waters are home to many kinds of whales, from large baleen whales to dolphins and porpoises. Their variety makes “a whale” a starting point for curiosity rather than the name of one uniform animal.

Two broad groups

Baleen whales include minke, humpback, sei, and fin whales recorded in Norwegian waters. Toothed whales include sperm whales, orcas, dolphins, and harbor porpoises. Dolphins and porpoises belong within the whale group, even though everyday language often treats them separately.

Whales are mammals and breathe air. Their lives take place in water, but they return to the surface to breathe. A brief view above the sea is therefore only a small part of the animal’s activity.

A coast with different habitats

A shallow coastal setting and deep offshore water offer very different surroundings. Species differ in their movements and feeding, so a general whale illustration cannot tell us precisely where or when an animal would be seen. Identifying a species requires more than a blue-gray color or a curved tail.

This variety is part of the interest. A large back breaking the surface, a raised fluke, and a distant silhouette each reveal different details to an observer.

Whales as a design subject

Our whale-themed clocks explore the relationship between the animal and the surrounding water. A smooth body can contrast with the repeated curves of waves. Open space around the figure can suggest scale and distance. The designs celebrate the broader subject without assigning an unverified species name to each image.
